RWTH Aachen was founded in 1870 and has a lengthy history of developments in education and research. Today, with 260 institutes in nine faculties, RWTH Aachen is one of Europe's leading institutes for science and research. Currently around 30,000 students are enrolled in over 100 academic programmes with 45 percent pursuing degree work in the engineering sciences. About 16 percent are international students coming from 130 different countries.
The scientific education that students receives at RWTH Aachen is firmly rooted in real-world application. As a result, graduates are highly sought-after by businesses as traniees for executive positions. RWTH Aachen has achieved outstanding results within the Excellence Initiative established by the German federal and state governments: in 2007 it was nominated as one out of Germany's top ten academic institutions.
