Carbon Footprint Challenge Finalists and Winners 2017

UNITECH people and ideas at core of the Carbon Footprint Challenge 2017
In the Carbon Footprint Challenge 2017 the challenge was set to develop ideas to reduce carbon footprint in manufacturing industries and in the food value chain. The Challenge was set up and run by Bühler with the support of Nosco who operate the challenge platform. The invitation to participate was sent to all UNITECH members with the possibility to extend the access beyond the network to create diverse team entries.
The response to the Challenge was extremely encouraging. 877 people registered; there were 11,000 accesses on the challenge platform page, with 120,000 impressions on the official Facebook page. In all, 107 ideas were submitted to the Challenge Platform. From these the finalists were selected. For the Final, five teams were selected to prepare and present in a two day structured training event at Bühler HQ in Uzwil, Switzerland. Of these finalist teams, there were UNITECH people in four, with the fifth team coming from Bangladesh. The UNITECH people in the finalist teams were Shahin Mirzazadeh (2016/17), Alessandra Fusco (2016/17), Andrea Loi (2014/15), Hugh Weldon, Harry Crowley, and Marvin Garbade (all 2016/17).
The teams were supported by mentors from Bühler, Evonik, and UNITECH, and Jesper Muller of Nosco provided the structured input on preparing the proposals.
The judging team, from Bühler, Evonik, Infineon and UNITECH, were impressed by the proposals from all the finalists and were especially appreciative of the winning team’s willingness to learn and their conviction in their idea. The winning team focused on providing food consumers with information on food packaging to show the carbon footprint generated along the supply chain from farm to foodstore. The team consisted of Hugh Weldon, Harry Crowley and two fellow students from Trinity College Dublin - Max Hickey and Ahmad Mu`azzam.
